Rules for the novice player – Volleyball guidelines
Bart Starr, the famous volleyball player made the following comments about team spirit and personal motivation: “Anyone can support a team that is winning - it takes no courage. But to stand behind a team to defend a team when it is down and really needs
you, that takes a lot of courage.”
In order to be the key player that turns the table for his or her team in times of trouble, athlete needs to be sure of what they are doing on the court. That takes a lot of practice and confidence which can only be cultivated by hard work. However, every
player starts off at the beginner’s level and before one can become a star player on a team, the rules of the game need to be mastered.
We have already covered the basic rules that you need to know about serving as well as scoring. In this article, we will be discussing the playing of the game itself so that you gain more confidence in your next match.
Volleyball is a game that consists of two teams and six players on each team. Each player is required to change positions every time his team wins the serve. The changing of positions is done in a clockwise manner. In this way, each player gets to play at
every position on the court. This process of changing positions in volleyball is known as rotation. The rotation is only made when a side wins a serve and not when it loses it.
Once regular play has started, there are certain guidelines that need to be followed in order to not make a foul. The players must ensure that they do not touch the top of the net while hitting the ball. The front row players need to be especially careful
of this as they play close to the net.
According to new rule changes, players are no longer restricted to hitting the incoming ball with just their hands and forearms. Contact with the ball may be made by using the head, chest as well as the foot. However, care should be taken that the ball does
not come to a resting position while doing so, as it should be passed on by making a hit.
Whenever a hit is made, the ball should not be thrown so high that it touches the roof of the gym. This only applies if the game is being played indoors as opposed to beach volleyball. While going over to the other side, the ball may graze over the net.
However, if it touches the antennas on the sides of the net, it will be considered a violation. In case your team-mate hits the ball and it goes into the net and bounces back towards your side, you can save it from hitting the floor by making a hit on it.
Volleyball allows for team members to be substituted. In every set of the game, a total of six substitutions are allowed to be made. While making substitutions, care should be taken to do it before the ball is served. When a substitution has been made, only
the player that has been replaced can come back in his substitute’s stead.
That brings us to the conclusion of this article dealing with the basic rules about playing volleyball. We hope it helps you to perform even better in the court. Keep coming back for more guidleines!
