Causing the game to proceed without a goalie on one team. I've seen this before but I couldn't understand why or what the call was for. I'm new to hockey.

  1. yes but another player on the team serves the penalty (usually a 2 minute minor)

  2. The other answerers are right with the goalie being penalised for a foul play - someone else sits in the box for him.

Do you ask the question because you see goaltenders going off the ice?  If so, then that is the opposite - if there is a delayed penalty, the goaltender on the team that will get the power play can leave the ice for an extra attacker while they have puck possession.  Once the offending team touches the puck, there is a power play and the goalie comes back to the net.

  3. A goalie can commit a penalty but cannot serve time in the box, another player is sent in his place and the goalie stays in net.

  4. Just one more thing to add here: If a goalie is assessed a misconduct, then he still has to go to the dressing room like any other player. For example, in the Buffalo-Ottawa brawl game during the 06-07 season, Marty Biron and Ray Emery were both assessed game misconducts for leaving the crease and fighting, so the backups for that game had to suit up and finish in their stead.

  5. If a goalie takes a minor penalty, a teammate who was on the ice at that time must serve for him.  A goalie can be kicked out if he gets a misconduct however.  Then the backup goalie would come in.

  6. Yes a goalie can get a penalty, but they send another player to the penalty box that was on the ice during the infraction to serve for him.

  7. the goalie can get a penalty but another player has to be sent to the box as a replacement
