In tennis if you mess your first serve you get another chance, I can't think of another sport that does this, do you think it would make the game better if the player only had one chance to get the serve rite?

  1. I cant think of another sport like tennis that has a second chance in serving, but in lawn tennis but they can thank king Charles11.  In thr grounds of Wimbledon there is a Real Tennis court or Royal Tennis where King Charles 11 played.  His first serve went astray and the umpire said"  0-15."  The king said  " I say umpire I want another serve..I insist".  The officials did'nt want to argue and let him have another serve.  And so it was permitted for a second serve ever since.

  2. Some players have better serves than others, some are more prolific at serving aces so two chances opens the odds and gives more players a chance.

  3. It's actually extremely difficult for some people to get their first and second serves in. I struggle myself. Most kids miss their first serves, unless they put spin on it. Second serves are missed frequently because you get nervous. You are right... no other sport does this!!! =)

  4. I agree 100% tennis is spoilt these days (and especially in the days of Sampras) by the big server - however, years ago squash too had two serves available if you goofed on the first one - it's been much better without the 2nd serve.  People don't pay to see players slam the ball at some stupid speed during a serve, people pay and watch to see the rallies.  Interestingly that's why women's tennis is better value 'cause you actually see more tennis point for point and the men's game only makes up for this by virtue of the fact that the play best of five games.  I'll be interested to see what other people think.

  5. Serving is such a hard art to perfect; with the top players it deserves two attempts - even Fed gets it wrong sometimes. In Baseball, you get three attempts to strike the ball btw.

  6. Cricket,if you bowl wide,a no ball,  you have

to bowl an extra ball plus in 20/20

they get a free a hit whilst bowling an

extra ball for a no ball.

Tennis is also a game a like and the

extra ball for a first service fault dose

give the opponent a better chance, as nearly

always, the second serve is slower.

  7. No I definitely wouldn't say so myself. The strategies behind the service (first serve) and second serve are very different.

Typically the service is your heavy weapon and the second is meant to keep the ball in play. It's pretty rare that players will use the second serve as another opportunity to hit that 130mph ace.

Most professionals serve between 50-70% on their service so if there were only 1 chance per point you'd most likely see predominately spin serves played for higher percentage (no one likes losing on serves).

I guess the closest sport I could think of would be pitching in baseball or bowling in cricket. A pitcher can get up to three missed pitches (3 balls) to strike the batter out.

  8. it such a hard skill tho , even for proffesionals so i think getting 2 chances is fair

you get two shots in bowling if you dont get a strike in the first
