Question:

Rules of Reading?

Ok, its been forever since I "learned" how to read. And now I'm trying to help our 5 yr old read, and its a pain.

How do I explain when Y sounds like E.

Or when Vowels sound like the Letter not the sounds (ex. M-i-ke, D-a-y etc)

This is been the hard part for me to explain because she will sound out words how they would sound, but then she can't figure out the word. And when I tell her how it sounds she asks why, and my answer ends up being…uhhh just because.

Like D-a-y....She sounds it out more like Du-aaaa-Yuuu (hope that makes sense) Instead of Du-A-E

We use the website starfall.com, but it doesn't tell you how to know the difference...besides just memorizing words.

Anyways if someone could list out all the rules for me so I can explain it that would help. I’m not so much looking for a game, but for someone to teach me how to read haha.

Thanks!

  1. http://www.how-to-study.com/phonics-rule...

    Does this help?

  2. http://www.startreading.com/

This is what I used when I was five and loved it!

  3. There is a simple rule. You should get the list of the 100 most commonly used words and teach this is blocks of 10 - the child should learn these by sight recognition.

Additionally, also teach the phonetics of reading and spelling along with the little rules or differences.

As an example... the word DAY should be sight recognised, and the pronounciation of the Y comes along with the ending of "AY" not just Y.

So to teach this rule exemption you teach the cluster of letters of AY make the ay should (instead of the Y alone).

A great tool for you is the Phonetics Alive computer program which has all this in it.

  4. well what helped me when I was learning to read is instead of having them explain it to me because most likely a six can't wrap there mind around that so try giving him examples of words

  5. sound out words.

  6. yes the english language is really complicated. usually schools use both phonetically sounding out sounds and the use of dolches sight words which are words that cannot be sounded out and occur so much while reading that it is better to memorize them.

also the vowels have changed to a-e-i-o-u and sometimes y.

if you go to dolches sight words website, just start out with 3 words a week and then also incorporate three letter words that can be sounded out like cat dog cup and things like that.

just tell her that these are the rules of reading and leave it at that.

hope this helps. just google teaching phonics and you will get so many websites its not even funny

i use this site a lot for the different levels of children ranging for the ones that are starting to write and to the ones that are prereading.
