Question:

Rules on marking golf balls?

I want to play with a ball that has two lines around the ball, forming an X when looking down at the ball. Is this allowed by the USGA?

It seems to be much easier to putt with these lines on the ball.

One line directly pointed at the target, one line parallel to the club face.

Thanks!!

  1. Pretty much anything goes, you can mark as you wish. It's to identify the ball, but if it means helping you out on the putting green, so be it.

Lots of players use dots, lines (and line that line up along the line of their putt) and some even draw pictures on their golf balls.

Some are superstitious, and only use certain numbers of ball with certain markings. The possibilities are endless.

So mark away and have fun with the game.

  2. I wish you luck on getting that line you drew on line w/ your target.... Give me all white when putting.

  3. The purpose of marking your ball is strictly for identifying it as far as the rules are concerned, but I know of no restriction on what type of mark you might make.

  4. Yes.  Any markings are fine.

Below is a link to a ruling I found on www.usga.org
