Ruling on calling one’s son Mu’aawiyah and mention of some who bore this name

A Muslim Brother asked :-

My wife is a Muslim Saudi woman. She is originally from Persia. Some of her relatives do not feel very good towards the believers’ uncle ‘Mu’aawiyah ibn Abi Sufyaan' (may Allah be pleased with him) , .

She and I agreed to give the name “Mu’aawiyah” to our expected son in his defense. So that they may love our son, hence they may love the believers’ uncle(may Allah be pleased with him). Some of her relatives in the lands of Persia have some hateful s**+'ite tendencies, so they slander Mu’aawiyah. As for her mother and father, they do not have an opinion.

What is the ruling on giving the name Mu’aawiyah?.

I think keeping the "MuAWIYAH" ,is a bleesing .

So u should keep this name to tell others that we love him.

hmmm i dnt know the ruling of it but i am persian and sunni and i understand what you mean.

Many persians are shie so i think thats why her family might be against it....

i think if the name is used by others and has good meaning and intention.... then go for it :)

He was the person who he fought many times with Moula Ali (as)

The Jamal And sufain War.

What his mother Did Hinda She took Prophet's uncle Liver out and ate it.

His father was No converted till his last nasty breath

And his Laeen son He fought with imam hussain (as) and killed him in the Karballah War.

Although imam hussain (as) is Grand son of Holly Prophet and son Of Moula Ali And bibi Fatima (sa)

Would you like to name him a Nasty Person name on your kid ?

But I don't like to put name like this, as historical figure of that name is controversial.

Mu'aawiyyah Radhiallaahu anhu was the Brother in law of the Prophet salallaahu alaihi wa salam, his sister Umm Habeebah was the wife of the Prophet salallaahu alaihi wa salam. He was also the scribe of the Prophet salallaahu aalihi wa salam.

And the story of Hind bint Utbah radhiallaahu anhaa eating the liver of Hamzah radhiallaahu anhu is a weak narration, all the narrations pertaining to it are munqati', the chains cannot substantiate the story.

Hind bint Utbah and Abu Sufyaan both entered into Islaam and the Prophet salallaahu alaihi wa salam praised them.

Name your child Mu'aawiyyah, let the Rawaafidh scream as much as they want but they will never attain his status.

Muawiyah(RA) is great Sahaba and the Uncle of believers

so it's the rule on giving other great sahaba Names

Shias hated all sahaba

Muslims loved All sahaba

this is the difference between Islam and Shiaism

and the name Muawiyah is nice i would call my son that name insha'allah ..

There is no issue with naming your son Mu'aawiyah.  He was a Muslim after all and Ali had respect for him.  Granted, they didn't always agree but the fact that we have free will and can make choices is what makes us human after all.  And what makes us Muslim is that we have the testimony of faith in our hearts and hold all five pillars dear to us.  Allah knows best!

Why not name him Mu'aawiyah and middle name Ali, or Ali and middle name Mu'aawiyah. Both are sahaba and they had lovely names. This way you can satisfy everyone. There is no ruling on naming in Islam as long as it is a good name.
