Question:

Rumbling noise from pipes, how to get rid of?

My pipes are making a loud vibrating rumbling sound. It happens at random time but mostly about 1 minute after I flush the toilet and sometimes right when I turn on a faucet. Can someone tell me what to do or how to fix this problem? My house is about 30 years old with galvanized pipe and the noise usually comes from one side of the house.

  1. Sounds like you have water hammer, caused by air in your pipes.  Have a plumber install a bleed valve or a short run of vertical pipe for air expansion.  If you're handy, you can do it yourself.  Easy enough.  Just graft in short vertical piece of pipe somewhere in your system (a high point), and attach a valve to it.  Open the valve a tiny little bit and let air out every once in a while.

But best to use a plumber.  There's an art to quieting air hammer...

  2. It could be that the pipe is loose in a certain area. If you fasten the pipe in more places it should get rid of the noise. You get pipe clamps that you can s***w in on either side of the pipe, then you don't have to move the pipe. Otherwise just knock in some wood blocks in the back of the pipe to make sure it is the problem.
