Question:

Rumbling sound coming from the engine?

I have a 1998 Buick LeSabre and I am hearing a high pitched rumbling sound coming from the engine. I installed a new catalytic converter and it is not losing power. The noise gets louder as I drive, but I can hear it when the car is at idle. Also, if there is more than one person in the car it is even louder when I drive.

  1. If this noise just started after the installation of the converter, I would think it could possibly be coming from the connection between the exhaust manifold and the exhaust pipe. you can raise the hood with the engine running and listen close to the passenger compartment. Get someone to throttle the engine up and it will most likely get louder. keep your hands in a safe place!

  2. check your fluids. you might still have an exhaust leak..they may not have welded the cat to well. even a small hole there would give you a rumbling but not so much high pitch.  also make sure its not bad bearings on any of  your pulleys and make sure its not a wheel bearing.

  3. check the oil and coolant!

  4. sounds like it could be a pulley locked up.  Why did you install a new catalytic converter?  Get out of the car and lift the hood and listen closely instead of sitting in the cockpit.
