The Bayern Munich CEO has insisted that his side cannot afford to drop points against Borussia Dortmund if they need to claim the title.
Bayern Munich will take on the reigning German champions on Wednesday at the Signal Iduna Park in arguably the most awaited match of the season. The Munich giants are currently three points adrift of Dortmund and a win would put
them level on points with Jurgen Klopp’s side.
Karl-Heinz Rummenigge claimed that it is a do-or-die situation for his side as any result other than a draw would dent their chances of lifting the Bundesliga title at the end of the season. He admitted that a draw would also be
a favourable result considering the opposition’s brilliant form at home this season.
The chief admitted that if his side is successful in getting all three points against the Borussians, they will certainly be leading the race for the title as Dortmund have a host of tough fixtures coming up in the remaining course
of the season.
“We cannot lose because that would probably decide the championship early. In the event of a draw, the race would still be open, and with a win we would be in pole position to take over the lead Dortmund enjoy at the moment,” he
was quoted as saying in an interview.
On the other hand, manager Jupp Heynckes stated that nothing can be decided at this stage of the season and admitted that even in the event of a loss his side can go on to win the title. He is looking forward to a great battle
between two of Germany’s best teams and is hopeful of a great result.
“Only after the last day will we know who wins the title. It will still be open after Wednesday. I am looking forward to a great game for the fans,” he concluded.
Bayern Munich and Dortmund will meet on Wednesday, April 11, at the Signal Iduna Park. The Black Yellows won the reverse fixture at the Allianz Arena in November last year with a 1-0 scoreline courtesy a second-half goal from
midfielder Mario Gotze.
