Rumours of a rift resurface after Sehwag rested for Asia Cup – Cricket News Update
Following the announcement by the chairman of selectors, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Krishnamachari-Srikkanth-c71750, to rest Virender Sehwag for the Asia Cup owing to fitness concerns, a source close to the player has reported that the 33-year-old is, in fact, fully fit.
“He has not just batted, also bowled long spells and, in case India reaches the Commonwealth Bank Series final, will again take the field. He is totally fit,” a reliable source told top Indian newspapers.
Speculations erupted following the announcement of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/V-Sehwag-c2739 was absent from the line-up.
The right-hander has been rumoured to be out of favour with the BCCI, ever since reports of a rift between him and captain http://www.senore.com/Cricket/MS-Dhoni-c2028 emerged.
Following the implementation of team India’s controversial rotation policy, which required the three top players, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/G-Gambhir-c1447, to be rotated between matches, the skipper justified the policy by explaining that it
was needed because the three senior cricketers were slow on the field.
However, Sehwag immediately hit back at Dhoni, saying this was not what the skipper had told them.
“I did not know what he (Dhoni) said and what's going on in media,” Sehwag had told the media. “He told us he wanted to give a chance to youngsters who had come here and (could) play the next World Cup. That's what he told us.”
Owing to reports of dissent in the team, the BCCI urged Sehwag and Dhoni to hold a joint press conference, a request which the elder batsman refused to comply with. As a result, Dhoni was forced to hold the press conference alone.
Consequently, rumours that the batsman has been rested, not on grounds of fitness, but for saying no to the BCCI, have been in circulation.
The selection committee chief repeatedly told the media on Wednesday that Sehwag had been advised to rest by the team physiotherapist.
“The players have been rested on injury grounds. That is a promise. I cannot show you the medical reports because it is an internal matter,” Srikkanth said.
However, when probed further by persistent reporters for the actual reason behind Sehwag’s exclusion, the chairman lost his temper and told reporters to “shut up”.
In addition to Sehwag’s controversial “resting”, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Umesh-Yadav-c94625 were also excluded from the team.
