My 5yo female yorkie has a HIGH prey drive. I have been having problems with her and people. If she sees someone she doesn't know she barks and growls, if I let her go, she runs to them, circling them.. growling, and some times grabbing the pants leg. I want her to be friendly.

Also another problem. If she meets a dog shes all fine with the dog, but if they get too intrested in her, she growls a blood curling growl. She will not bite, but she hides behind me and growls. It happens if a dog trys to play with her.

  1. Go to the local library and get some dog books... Seems like the leash causes anxiety.. You should try walking her on the leash in the house w/o distractions.... Until she's comfortable with the idea of the leash... *Are you kidding a choke collar on a yorkie!  Hilarious!  Anyway!  Maybe try a tiny harness, or gentle leader... That might make the walk better for the dog.. .Less anxious... Take the dog to the dog park to socialize- if she misbehaves growls.. etc.. take her away from park... If she behaves give her praise and treats.... It may take awhile but, keep it up and eventually your dog will mind.. .If you let it go too long it might become something that's really hard to reverse...

    Good luck

  2. do you ever what.... ITS ME OR THE DOG .????????? VICTORIA shes been in traing for over 10 years thats who you need a pro. trainer to train your dog like her ........ what her show shes good.. i think it comes on animal planet.... what times i dont know.....i whatch and learn from watching her ..........

  3. you should try this exercise. Get someone who knows you well but not the dog. every time she growls or bites tell them to yelp and then walk away from her. then you tell her no in a stern voice and then both of you ignore her. I find it best to cross your arms and stare at the ceiling. you might want to do this with a good friend that does not come to your house often. also this may take a while so make sure your friend is tolerant. when she stops growling biting ect. give her a treat and praise her. people have to show that they do not like it when she growls at them. you might want to take her to the vet if this doesn't work after a month. Make sure you train consistently.

As for making cash you could mow lawns... I guess.

you could also volunteer at a kennel and some of the people there might be able to help you and it could also help her get introduced to other dogs.

for dog training tips go to

also I would try getting a gentle leader

    Good luck with your dog

  4. thats not prey drive thats aggressiveness, your dog needs to be socialized, best for you to get a professional trainer to help you.also dont let your dog go free with people around or period, anytime your dog is not in the house or backyard it should be on a leash.

choke chains will not help if you dont know how to use them correctly and you could end up hurting your dog, also hitting your dog in any way will not solve anything, it will make it worse.

if you dont even have the money for proper training then you shouldnt own a dog.your dog is going to end up huting someone or someday because you "dont have the cash" .

get the cash and get the training or find the dog a better home.

it doesnt matter how well your dog is off leash, it needs to be on a leash at all times, this is for the safety of your dog and others.letting your dog off leash like that is very irresponsible.

lol tapping on the nose = hitting, so yes you have done that.

and it appears that you have not trained very well or else a complete stranger could pet your dog on or off leash with no problems.

a 14 year old should not be responsible for a dog, and your case is exactly why, tell your parents that the dog needs training it will cost around $100, do some extra chores around the house to pay it off.

why are you asking for help but keep denying that your dog is in need of training? if you dont want help then dont ask, since you seem to think you know it all , then figure it out by yourself

  5. ok, you are 14 and need help with your dog that will require professional help. call your local shelter and explain the situation to them and see if they have any suggestions to help. because right now she may not be biting, but from the sounds of it, she could and then she will be in a world of trouble. you have not said if she is a pure breed yorkie or not, but if your family paid $750 for her then it sounds like she is. So also check with the yorkie breeders in your area who can possibly give you some advice on the breed, as they don't want their breed to get a bad rep. Good luck.

  6. well first thing never use a choke chain or collar or whatever.

it will seirously hurt the dog. get a harness so when the dog pulls it will feel like its feet are lifting off the ground so it will stop.

when your dog starts getting agressive towards another dog,(on a leash) simply turn around and walk in another direction. keep on doing that and she will start to think that being agressive towards other dogs is a bad thing. soon she will have no problem with any dog.

  7. Sounds like she could use some professional training. You should consult your vet for a trainer and get her in some classes. Good luck with her!
