Hey Everyone! I'm a marathon runner, used to run for the high school but hated the team, so I do marathons now and occasional 5Ks to keep in shape. (Waiting for college)

Anyways. . . I want to become a swimmer. I was at a swimming camp a few weeks ago for beginners, and one of the counselors said that with alot of practice, I could be really great at it.

I know the basics, like stretching and such. But what do I really have to do to swim competitively. I know this won't be easy, but I'm willing to work as hard as I can. :D Thanks!

  1. practice a lot and you'll be great at it!

  2. I'm a runner and a swimmer also. I can tell you this, swimming complements running, but running does not complement swimming. I've seen many great runners who were awful swimmers because they did not know how to correctly use their bodies. So much of swimming is based on technique rather than fitness. I'd get involved with as masters team in your area. They will give you people to train with and also be able to correct your technique. I'm sure you are a fantastic athlete, but do not make the mistake of trying to set out on your own. Swimming is a lot more fun and easier when done in a group. Try to surround yourself with knowledgable, positive people. Finally, the only way to be a swimmer is to swim. When training to be a swimmer, NOTHING is as effective or important as time in the water.

  3. Find out whether there are any swim clubs in your area.  I think usaswimming.com has a link for that.  They swim year 'round and are a good way to build your skills.
