Question:

Running Cramps?

I bought new running shoes yesterday for cross country. I was told that as long as I didn't get the shoes too dirty I could return them after a few days so I couldn't run my usual route because it was a dirt road. So I ran the whole thing on pavement. About a mile or so into it I got really sharp pain in my hip and then the same knee started aching. Before my run I had a headache so I wanted to take some Advil so I ate a couple crackers about twenty minutes before I left. I wasn't sure what the pain is from: the shoes, the food, or the pavement. And if it's the shoes, is it because I'm breaking them in or could it possibly just be the shoes??

  1. prob because you are out of shape

  2. Might be your running shoes.I wear stabilizer shoes cause of my foot pronation.  This is a good link to help you find good shoes:

It sounds like you need to eat the right stuff for running.Don't drink too much water you can cramp up and overhydrate yourself(in extreme cases its happened but I don't think youre going to do that). But do hydrate yourself, that might explain your headache.

Food is a huge thing, things with potassium is good. I always try to have a banana an hour before I run.Bananas are an amazing fruit especially before a workout.Stay away from dairy especially milk.It will clog you up.

As for the surface you're running on, gravel is the best to run on cause it puts less impact on your body.Trying running off of the road. Then again it could be your running shoes cause good/correct running shoes to your foot pronation can get you going okay on the pavement. Not speed, but impact-wise.Kinda like Michael Jordan shoes don't make you jump higher :) hope this helped.

  3. If you drank water with the medicane it was deffinatly the water that caused the cramp

water during the day you run is good. butt, not right before you run.

the knee thing could be the shoes but not the cramps.

  4. Sounds like a combo of dehydration, lactic acid, and cramping up. Next time you go run make sure it's cool weather, (morning or night) drink hydrating fluids 30 minutes before until you run, eat a banana 20 minutes before you run. The potassium helps with the cramping.
