I want to mount a Marine stereo using a 5A 12v power supply on the outside of my garage with speakers throughout the yard. I have out door speakers (8 ohm) but car/marine audio is designed to run 4ohm speakers. Can it be done?

  1. Yes.  Your Marine unit can run the 8 Ohm speakers.  Make sure the speakers are rated to handle the increased power.  (When you step down to 8 Ohm from 4 Ohm, your radio will make 2x the wattage).

  2. Should work fine.  You may not get the output like you want because you're running a higher impedance load than the marine amp is designed, but that's fine.  Think about this: it's running a higher impedance load, so that's more resistance.  You shouldn't blow anything up, and that's a good thing!

  3. It will work but you are going to be limited to one or two speakers on each speaker output of the stereo.  If the unit is designed for two 4 ohm speakers (total) then you can connect two 8 ohm speakers to each channel (four 8 ohm speakers).  Any more than that may overload the stereo.
