I've trained for about 7-8 months and feel pretty ready, but was wondering if there is anything that could really help me out raceday that I probably wouldn't know or any good tips some veteran distance runners might have for me or anyone else reading this topic.

  1. Don't go out too fast. You're going to want to, as are a lot of people around you. Start sloooooow or you'll pay later. Seconds gained early on equal minutes lost near the end.

Don't do anything new on race day. Any different clothing -- anything -- wear for at least a training run or two beforehand to make sure there are zero issues.

Don't do anything new on race day.

Try not to eat too late the night before, and minimize foods that will take a lot to digest (fiber, protein, etc.).

Take a salt packet or two with you. Some will have one at the start and take the other over halfway.

Get there with time to spare so you can not be rushed, can find gear check if you're using it, etc.

Line up where you're supposed to -- assumably not at the front. Hopefully they're using a corral system.

Before the race, go use the portajohn. And after you use it, get in line to use it again. Keep repeating until the race starts.

Start hydrating early on in the race. The first water tables can be crowded. If you can carry a disposable water bottle early on, you can skip them. Whenever you do use the aid stations, be sure not to slam to a stop so that people run into you. Get your cup, keep moving, and get out of the way.

Beware having a time objective of any sorts your first time. Your objective is to finish. Your second objective is to remain in one piece. You don't want to ruin your accomplishment by failing to meet a time goal (or badly injuring yourself).

P.S. Don't do anything new on race day.

  5. The night before drink lots of water and gets lots of sleep. The night before eat pasta. Then in the morning eat a banana 2 hours before you run.
