Question:

Running a mile in ten minutes? ?

I was just informed that for volleyball practice we have to run a mile in ten minutes or less and if we don't we have to do it over again.

Normally I would be able to do it with no problem, but I haven't run since school (may). So I haven't trained for this or anything.

Are there any tips to help me pull it off. I have to do this in like two hours.

  1. drink a glass or two of water to keep from cramping up while you run, eat a granola bar or bagel for some quick carbs without weighing you down

10 mins isn't too bad for 1 mile so you should be ok, just stay calm and run at a steady pace, you should be fine

  2. A mile in ten minutes is nothing.  Think about it, that would only require you to run 6 miles per hour.  The average person walks about 4 mph, so it's a light jog.   You should have no problem.   I'll bet you run it in under 8.

  3. Make sure you warm up really well first and pace yourself.

  4. Trust me a mile in ten minutes is nothing. It really isn't. I bet it would surprise you immensely if you went out and tried it right now...

I had surgery on my shoulder that left me with my arm in a sling for four months... and before the surgery I couldn't run either... It was dislocated in two locations, yet... the very first run I did after that... I ran 1.5 miles in a little over 12 minutes.

Drink water and stuff two hours before. Don't drink anything or eat anything within an hour and a half of when you have to go do it.

Stay determined and think of what you have to do.

Stay at a pace you can maintain... and when the end is in sight... give it all you have left. Dig deep.

  5. Try using a very healthy diet while you train. Go heavy on the water.(not to much while running or you get cramps) My XC team has been working every day this week on sprints and distance running. Here is our light routine:(keep in mind this is light junior high runs) Warm up jog about quarter mile. Stretching. 1 mile timing run. 15 minutes continuous at medium to high pace. Stretch. Half mile sprint. Stretch Cool down quarter mile jog. We do this and try to incorporate as many hills as we can because when it comes to improvement, hills will be your best friend. Hard work but it helps a lot.

  6. A 1/2 an hour before I start to run at all, I eat a banana and a glass of water. Be careful not to drink or eat to much or you will cramp.

Next, you will want to stretch well. (I stretch 10-15 minutes before a run)

Finally, on the run, don't jump the gun at the start. You should start at a pace that you can keep the whole mile. What I try to do is keep up with someone I know who is faster than me to help me improve.

  7. Use the force.  Mind over matter.  But whatever you do dont push it too hard... Good luck :)
