Question:

Running a red light in NY?

by  |  earlier

I made a turn as the light changed from yellow to red and got pulled over in NY and I am a New Jersey Resident. I know I have to $200 as stated on the back of the ticket and that I will receive 2 points. I was wondering if anybody knew how much my insurance will increase by? I have the most basic form of Allstate insurance and this is my first offense. Any help would be more than appreciated.

  1. Rule of thumb.  Never tell your insurance anything you don't have to.

Insurance companies do not have time to check the driving record of every policy holder on a continual basis.  However, if you give them a reason to check your driving record: (e.g. You file a claim, you call them and tell them you got a speeding ticket, etc, etc.) then they will.

As far as the ticket, if it's worth it for you to fight ... then do so.  Contest the ticket, subpoena the cop and see if it's worth their time to show up in traffic court.  The majority of the time they don't show.  If the cop doesn't show, the ticket is thrown out.  Challenge the cop to see if a red light infraction is worth their time to come into court.  This is how I've kept a clean driving record...  =)

  2. truth be told: a lot

    hire a lawyer

    fight it

i fought a felony and 2 misdemeanors and got them reduced to a non moving violation and spent $500 up front

my insurance would have been 3-4 times what it is now according to my insurance agent albeit mine was more serious, never the less it will increase more than it costs to fight it

unless of course when they asked if you know why they stopped you your reply was "cause i ran that red light?"

  3. Phone Allstate and ask them.  They are happy to give you all of the information.  They will also tell you what your chances are if you fight the ticket.  They will not put any notes on your file about the conversation so it will not be there when you renew.
