Question:

Running at 5000 feet elevation?

I'm used to running at 500 feet elevation, and soon i'll be going to cross country camp at 5000 feet elevation. Will it be ahrder? how much? and any tips?

  1. Try running at 10,000 ft. Then 5,000 will be easy.


  2. It affects you a lot, the oxygen content in the air is a lot less, so you aren't getting as much as fast. If you stay long enough the number of red blood cells will increase and you will begin to improve. This is a temporary gain, however, and once you return to normal elevation your red blood cell count will return to normal. Also, breathe deep! Let the oxygen flow through your veins!

  3. Yes, it is harder, which is why the camp is at altitude.

    I assume the coach is going to give  you a few days to acclimate.

    Drink plenty of water, it is easy to become dehydrated and not know it.

    Take deep breaths, don't pant or gasp you will not get in much air if you do.


  4. yes it will be harder there is not as much air up there. make sure to take deep long breaths when running.
