Running...breathing?

I was curious how to breathe while running? I was never really able to do it as a child, i would always get short of breath long before anyone else. Is there a special way to breathe while running? i've tried running just recently but can't go far due to the shortness of breath (no history of asthma). Any technique that i could learn?

  1. The reason you get short of breath is lack of training. The more you run, the better your breathing will get. When you run, go as far as you can until you get short of breath and then walk for awhile....then run again and repeat. Eventually you'll get so you can run longer and longer without getting short of breath. It just takes practice...it doesn't come overnight.

  2. In through your nose, out through your mouth. It will strengthen your lungs.

  3. Personally, I use only my nose for the majority of the race when I'm holding a constant pace and I switch to in-through-the-nose and out-through-the-mouth during my last kick. It would be best to experiment to see what works best for you. However, I would suggest avoiding breathing in through your mouth altogether because this will make your throat very dry very fast.

  4. Well, there are many theories, and no correct way, as to how to breathe.

Many people, myself included, believe you should just breathe however comes normally.  If this means you're taking more breaths before everyone, that's okay.  Paying attention to your breathing can help you understand how hard you're pushing yourself, or your pace.

Some people believe you should breathe in through your nose, and out through your mouth.  The logic behind this is that the nose warms the air, and makes it easier to breathe, and the mouth allows as much carbon dioxide out at once as possible.

My argument against this is that it's unnatural, and feels very awkward when running as opposed to jogging.

Some people believe you should breathe with a certain rhythm, such as 2 in-1 out.  The logic is that it keeps your heart at a certain level.  I find that monitoring the way your breathe helps you understand how hard you're working, and as such this throws it off.

As far as techniques go, perhaps just pay attention to how you breathe, and try to listen to yourself.  This way, you learn when you're really pushing yourself hard, and if you're running very hard very early in the run, you would know to slow down.

    Hope it helps!

  5. breathe in your nose and out your mouth slowly (breathing fast and heavy may cause side stiches and cramps).

  6. You should breathe however it comes to you!

It's the best way, cause you will be thinking about too much
