I am finishing my 5th week of running. I run on the treadmill every work day M-F. I start with 5 min of brisk walking 4 - 4.5mph then I move on to running I follow Bob Glower's beginner program and this week I'm running 6 min at 6 mph then walk for 1.5 min then repeat 3 times. Remaining 10 minutes I set treadmill for uphill (7 out of 15) and walk at around 4mph keeping my hart rate at around 145-155. I conclude with 5 min cool down. In total I'm about 45min on the treadmill covering about 3.6 miles. The reason I'm asking is simple. I was 230 lbs before I started and I do not know why I got on that scale today but it showed 230 again. I understand the fact that muscle is heavier than fat but to the ounce? How is this possible that I did not loose any weight/fat. OR gain just enough muscle to keep me at the same weight. My eating habits are pretty much the same except I replaced most of my red meat with grilled salmon and other sea food stuff. I never drank too much maybe a glass of beer a day or so. Leaving everything the same shouldn't I be loosing weight still ? I didn't start eating more but I definitely started to do some exercise...

  1. it's possible if you eat more calories then you burn off. Or your at your standered weight. i'm 5' 8" and i've been 130 for a year no matter what i do!

  2. Cut your calorie intake by 500 a day and continue with your exercise.

When I started running I didn't get very far, but by continued to run and I got better at it and could run longer distances. I could barely run a quarter mile when I started. I stopped drinking soda and stopped overeating. I lost over 20 pounds in around 2 months. I run at least 10 miles per week, some weeks as much as 30 miles. My runs are usually more then an hour long around 1-2 hours.

  3. To be honest I dont really have an answer. It sounds like you are making some really great steps to become healthier and I recommend you keep it up whether or not you lose weight.

It's surprising that you have stayed the exact same weight, is it possible that there is a problem with your weigh scale. Also- I know that when I exercise more, I tend to be hungrier and consume more calories unknowingly so I guess that's something you could watch out for.

  4. Shepov,

If you're in your 5th week of your program where you exercise 45 minutes per day and 5 times per week, with everything else being equal, you should be losing weight.

There are some questions to ask though:

1.) How tall are you? Is 230 normal or overweight?

2.) If you replaced your red meat with fish then normally you should lose weight, unless your portions have increased or the number or meals increased, or your overall calories have increased.

3.) When did you weigh yourself at the beginning of your course compared to the end of your course? Were both weigh ins at the same time of day? in the AM/PM, after/before a meal, before/after exercise, with/without clothes/shoes?

4.) Have you increased you water intake?

5.) Are your clothes still fitting the same or are they looser fitting?

With the amount of information you've given (and it's significant) you should have lost weight if you're overweight and have been truthful about your workouts (and they're consist ant).

One doesn't begin to lose weight until after 30 minutes of aerobic exercise so if you're keeping your heart rate up for 45 minutes, 5 days a week, and are not increasing your caloric intake (it should be somewhere around 2000 calories/day) then you'll lose weight. It's also possible you might need to be patient and continue with your program longer.

    I hope this helps.

    Enjoy!

  5. Change your diet. Eat less calories. Keep exerciseing!!
