Running etiquette: cemeteries?

The only thing approaching a park in my neighborhood is a really large, beautiful cemetery. Is it considered disrespectful (or even illegal) to jog through it?

  1. I would walk, rather than jog through it.

My husband and I were in Bermuda a few weeks back, and stopped at this gorgeous old cemetery to take pictures...people were jogging by, and they stopped to walk through, and some even shushed their children out of respect.

It was near a road, and people even slowed down while driving by.

I don't have the book of etiquette on this topic, but it seems respectful to be quiet, and move quietly while in a place of rest.

Based on the replies of the runners on yahoo answers, my experience while in Bermuda might have been a cultural thing...not being a runner myself, all I could share was my experience, having just recently been exposed while on vacation in another country.

  2. i dont see anything wrong with it. its not like your vandalizing it. maybe you'll even liven up peoples spirits by running by

  3. i dont think so

  4. I don't think it's disrespectful, as long as there is not a funeral going on.

  5. I'm a runner... and I have taken jogs through cemetaries plenty of times... no biggie!

  6. I run through a cementary, its quiet and peaceful.  Definately makes me grateful to be alive and able to run.  The only time I stop running is when there is a funeral going on, out of repect, I take a detour.  And sometimes  I stop at my mothers grave to pay my repects.

  7. There is nothing wrong with running through a cemetary unless there is a specific sign that says no running. In fact cemeteries are a good place to run, you don't really have to worry about traffic running you over or kids running out in front of you, dogs coming after you. The cemetary down the road from my house is huge and it even has distance markers every 1/4 mile which is awesome for when I am doing timed splits. I would say just be quiet if someone is next to a grave or if someone is being burried.

  8. As long as there are no signs up, you should be fine.  A cemetery may be private property, so if the care-taker asks you not to, it would be best to stop.

Otherwise, use common sense (don't run through a funeral), and you should be fine.

  9. It's okay unless a funeral is going on. Don't let the boogey man get you.
