In terms of increasing metabolism, cardio fitness, losing weight, etc. which one would be better?

For example, running a mile as fast as you can...or jogging 2 miles? I'm not training for races or anything. I just want to tone up, lose some body fat, look better and improve my overall fitness.

  1. Well, to achieve what it seems as you want to, some of both would be best.

    For example-

You could do a mile as fast as you could one day (or even multiple shorter distances) and then do a 5k jog the next. To achieve increase in matabolism you need to work on more than just one aspect of running. You also would benifit from swimming about 30 laps a day or even do some speed skating. (if u skate)

  2. I seriously doubt there is a correct answer to your question, as it is a really good question. Hard to say when you look at marathoners and how lean they are, and compare them to say sprinters, who are also lean and very muscular.

I typically run for speed, but I usually run two miles at a time; what I've noticed is that not only do I not have a problem being the fastest in 4 mile runs with my local running group, but I also am getting pretty lean; I would say find a middle road that you can bear (1 mile pretty fast, 3 miles moderately fast, whatever) and stick to it for a good two months; if you get bored, change it up... do some trail runs, etc. something to keep things 'new'. Hope that helps.

  3. Run faster and incorporate with walk breaks, so you can run the same distance in a faster pace - the concept of interval workout or fartlek, depends how you run it. This will definitely burn more calory and tone your body at the same time.

  4. Your body will get most of its energy from the carbs you ate (quick energy) for the fast mile since it doesn't have time to break down the fats.

Jogging a few miles burns more fat because your body can start breaking down the fats in your body for energy (stored energy).

Also I've read walking many miles burns more fat than jogging and it also a lot less damaging to joints.

  5. Running slower for a long distance. The trick to cardio is time. You need to go for 30-60 minutes to get a good workout. Don't over-do it.

  6. The longer runs will burn more calories.

The shorter ones will probably help you with toning up your muscles.

I would recommend running longer distances, and using diet and other exercise (weights) for the other benefits.

  7. I run about 5-6 days a week and I debate over this too. I usually end up going a little slower and running more miles because I feel like I've accomplished more and it makes me feel more in shape to endure a longer run. If you're using a treadmill, I also suggest walking at a fast pace uphill, it burns tons of calories.

Another thing I've gotten into is tracking my miles everyday and then see how many miles I've totaled that month. It can be really exciting to see how far you're gone and you'll find yourself doing a few more miles each day just to boost your overall monthly goals.

I've lost about 40 pounds this past year and its all due to the running and also cutting back on junk food and replacing it with fruits and veggies. Good luck!
