  1. Lucky you :)

If your not sure about the area, ask the concierge (hotel attendant at the front desk), get as much information as you can before you leave your holiday on the websites of running clubs in the area of where your travelling.  If you found a club, email them asking if you could run with them, they would most likely welcome you...since they share the passion for running.

I have done this, finding a club to run with, telling them that I was training for a marathon, and they were thrilled that a foreigner asked to join them...great way to meet friends from abroad.

    Have fun:)

  2. You can ask or run very early in the morning. I have learned that most of the bad guys sleep late, and stay up late so they are not out early in the day.

Stay in public areas, some parks could be a problem if you are out of sight.

  3. To make sure the area is safe you can talk to the hotel reception (if you are in a hotel, if not who ever runs the accommodation). They should know where it is safe to run (after all, if you run somewhere that isn't safe, then there is less chance you will return, and less chance of you wanting to spend money there in the evening (for example meals and things) - so its in their interest to advise you well.

Of course, with holidays you shouldn't leave your senses at home. Remember that there are bad people out there and keep your whits about you just the same as if you ran here. You will also have to be aware of traffic and the traffic rules and that it drives on the other side of the road. If its warm you will need to take water with you (follow the normal advice on tap water / bottled water) and sun screen, don't run when it is very hot. Just be sensible

  4. Ask the hotel manager or a store owner.

Also you can walk around during the day and look for some runners to give you some suggestions.  If there's any parks they're usually okay but make sure there are some people there just in case you need help.

  5. If you see anyone with a gun then maybe reconsider. Assuming you run without wearing an ipod or similar expensive gadget, i think you'll be safe enough wherever you are as robbers will only rob you if you appear to have something of material gain to them. Some gringo running down the street with a pair of shorts and a tshirt isn't overly enticing. Your trainers however may well be worth holding you up for (this has happened to people i know in El Salvador). Avoid ghettos and well known dangerous zones of cities.
