Running measurements?

how do people know how far they have run/jogged when they are not on a track? is there something which they can wear which tells them how far they have run, or do they work it out on how long they have ran etc.

i was just curious because i always hear people saying, 'iv run 5ks today', when they havent been on a track. and i doubt they have been going out with a tape measure.

thanks

  1. Some people can tell the speed they are running so they have a good idea as to how far they ran.

Some trails are marked so you can see the distance.

Some people will measure a distance so they know when they have run a distance.

There are devices you can put on your shoe that will tell you your distances.

You can track  your distance on www.gmap.com so you can tell how far you have run.

  2. Basically, there are 2 ways. 1. Drive a car and based on the Odo. reading to map out route(s) of distance. 2. Use a GPS device - Garmin forerunner is very popular. The 201 is cheap and has the basic functions, the 305 or 405 are fancy with some extra features, but are more expensive. Depends on what you need.

    Hope this answers your question.
