I have a boat with a 1995 130 hp outboard motor on it. I was looking at taking it down to the coast to go fishing. Would the Saltwater hurt the motor?

  1. no!!

if it is a 4 stroke, then you don't have to do anything.

but if it is a 2 stroke (witch means you have to premix oil and gas), when you get home you need to rinse out the cooling system with "bunny ears" witch go around the cooling water intake.

bunny ears are a U shaped metal bar with square pieces of rubber on the ends with a hose attachment on one of the  rubber pieces.

if you have more questions, go to your local marine shop.

here are the steps to rinse out the engine:

    1. put the bunny ears on the cooling water intake

    2. attach the hose to the bunny ears and turn on the hose

    3. start the engine

    4. rev the engine to approx. 2000 rpm(or a bit higher than idle) and leave it running with the throttle in this position for approx. 2 mins.

    5. put the throttle back down(to normal idle speed)and put the engine in gear (forward)

    6. put the engine in neutral

    7. turn off the engine and remove the bunny ears and turn off the hose.

Note: after boating in salt water, it is necessary to rinse off the hull of the boat (the hull is the part of the boat that floats on the water) and the boat trailer, to prevent damage to the Fiberglas hull of the boat and to prevent damage by rust on the trailer.

Also I agree with richard: the easiest way to rinse out the engine, the  boat and the trailer would be to go boating in fresh water for a litle while, after finishing on the ocean.

  2. It won't hurt it , but be sure to flush it out real well, the salt can corrode the metal, good luck

  3. No. It will be ok to use this motor in saltwater.  If you do use it, put a flush attachment on it, and run the engine for fifteen minutes or so.    Even better, take the boat fishing in fresh water after you saltwater trip.   I hope you catch the one that got away from me!

  4. You bought this boat to enjoy it right ? Just make sure you

can handle the stronger waves and tides. Also , think about

where you would anchor to if you had a problem. These are

your main issues. As far as the salt, make sure you hose

everything down after having fun in the sun, or salt I should say. The boats motor, the trailer and the rear of the car or truck if that's going to be in the water to unload the boat.

There are plenty of flush kits available, just make sure you

don't overheat the engine by doing something wrong.

And of course, don't forget the plug in the bottom of your boat,

and your keys, and your coast guard approved lifesaving equipment. I don't want to be a stickler here, just thought I'd

give you some tips to think about.

Enjoy the coast, just be prepared.
