Running on spot compared to running on treadmill plus skipping?

Hi all!!

I've read so many answers to the question "does running on the spot = running on treadmill?" all of them answering "NO!" for various reasons which I totally understand.

However if running in the spot is so bad (compared to running on treadmill) then why do so many people recommend skipping? Is it not the same? Please explain...

*Note: when i say "same" or "=" i mean in terms of cardio workout.

  1. I don't know what you all talking about, but if you exercising for you health go to a gym (treadmill) . But a real athlete don't do treadmill under air conditioner. We go on the sidewalk and burn some REAL sweat.  It's us against the universe. When you race do you have a treadmill to push you, no you don't so, that is why avoid treadmill. The only time I do so, if it's hurricane season.

  2. It may not be quite the same in terms of how many calories you burn per hour, but it should be pretty close.  You will get a good cardio workout regardless.

  3. Dunno.Running on a TredMile is good for you though.

  4. running on the spot is not bad compared to running on a treadmill, it is just that between the 2 cardiovascular wise it is better to run on a treadmill. Running in one place doesn't use half the muscles or energy as regular running. You wouldn't be using any of the muscles that move you forward and because of that it uses less energy. If there are no other options by all means go ahead and run in one place.

  5. A few thoughts:

    1. There's one similarity between the two: you never move forward:-)

    2. When you run in place, you bump with legs vertically against the ground which puts lots of load on the knees. Treadmill imitates  real running in this respect.

    3. When it comes to cardio and/or burning calories, you should consider intensity and duration. In theory you should get the same results with either running or running in place or skipping, but: for how long can you keep running in place? 5 mins, 10mins? It's not natural and dead boring. It is easier to run longer on a treadmill.

    4. My preference would always be to go out the door and do the real thing.
