Question:

Running on the beach...?

This might be a dumb question, but would appreciate any helpful answers. I just moved near a beach for the first time in my life (grew up in Kansas), and have always wanted to go running barefoot on the beach. To get to this beach, I need to walk 7 blocks through town, so need to bring a backpack along to put my shoes and shirt in for when I go running. Do any of you do this, and if so, where do put your stuff so it'll stay safe while you run? I'll be walking, so the obvious answer of "in your car" is out. Thanks for your suggestions/answers.

  1. While living in San Diego,I attended San Diego State Univ., I would running in the sand a lot.  It sounds like you are an experienced runner, but just do your run bare footed (leave the shoes at home) that way you don't need to worry about your things. Or you can do as I did in sd in that most people are honest and assuming that it is a crowded beach your things should be safe. I never lost any thing in my 16 years of living in sd.

  2. Walk seven blocks away without your stuffs with you!

  3. Can't speak for your beach but at the Jersey Shore I take my things down to the beach - set up - and go.  Never had a problem.

Barefoot running is great but be careful of broken shells, etc.

If you run in shoes it is better to run when the tide is going out then when it is coming in.  Outgoing leaves hard pack sand but incoming advances to the dry, soft sand.

  4. You don't want to run on the beach the whole time.

Running on the beach doesn't make your cavles contract like they are suppose to when you are running correctly, this can lead to injury.

But say your run is 40 minutes, 15 minutes should be the max for beach. Then as you get more use to the surface, you can soon increase it to about 30, but most of your runs should be on sand.

  5. wear your shoes when your going to the beach forget about the backpack and the shirt hello its the beach.......

  6. If it's only seven blocks, why worry about either? Just walk (or better yet jog to get a little warm-up) to the beach in what you're going to run in.

  7. bring someone with you and have them hold it for you. OR when you walk the 7 blocks to the beach wear flip flops that you dont care if you lose and just leave them somewhere on the beach instead of bringing a backpack to put shoes in. This way you can run barefoot on the beach. You might not get the junky flip flops back but who really cares. and for the shirt think just dont wear one the entire time so you dont have to put that in a backpack either.
