Running pains?

i would like to be a runner and be able to go jogging but whenever i go i get bad pains down the sides of my shins, once it got realy bad and i think i did a stress fracture. How can i start running and not get bad shin pains?

do i have to build up my feet first by walking? and will it ever stop happening?

  1. Shin splints suck!  A number of things that you can do.

    1)  Check your feet shape.  If you have flat feet, I would suggest specific types of padding and shoes to match the contour of your feet.

    2)  Run on soft surfaces as much as possible (avoid hard surfaces like cement and the road)

    3)  Stretch before you run

    4)  Ice your shins after your workouts

    The pain does eventually go away (at least for me it did), but it took close to a month, sometimes two before the pain actually left...


  2. You sound like you have Shin Splints - when you ran, did you just chuck on any old trainers and run on the pavement?

    Go to a proper training shoe shop - they'll get you to stand barefoot and they'll check out your foot balance (high arches, fallen arches), your gait, how your foot falls when you run - and they'll suggest a proper pair of running shoes (going to JD Sports is not the solution).

    Run on grass wherever possible, this'll minimise impact problems.  

    Providing you do this you'll be fine.  If you do notice any pain, stop, rest up for a while, don't do that "run through the pain", I made that mistake when I hurt my knee, my other leg then over-compensated and it messed me up for much longer than if I'd just listened to my body.

  3. You sound like a beginner. How long have you been jogging? I've been jogging for over 6 years and I still get pains. Ankles, knees, feet, calves, groin, hips, lower back. I'm always carrying a niggle of some sort. This is probably because I'm over 15 stone and impact injuries are inevitable.

    The key is being able to decipher between NIGGLES and INJURIES. This can only come with experience.
