So I ran a 2:33 as a freshman in the 800m last year. This year I can't even get down to a 2:35. I want to break 2:20 and possibly win state. I'm really discouraged and my coach is thinking about having me run the 3200m and 1600m instead of the 1600m an 800m. I have no idea what to do! I PRed the other day in the mile with a 5:41, but I don't like that race. I love the 800...what do I do????

  1. possibly take a break before you run the day before.   If you practice too hard, your legs will be dead

  2. my first ? is if you have done a winter base...you need a certain mileage (about 700mi) total in a season to reach your full peak next up what kind of weekly workouts are you doing that makes a huge difference...also are you drinking lost's of water on race day because not being fully hydrated can ad upto 3% of your race time(that's about 3-4 seconds) you are really determined so mental power probably isn't a problem(disatnce even the800 is almost all mental)psot details asap answering these ?'s and i'll get back to you...good luck and if worse comes to worse the mile isn't all bad and sometimes we're just better at what we don't like for instance i love the mile but just can't seem to break 5 min whereas i hate the 800 with a passion and i'm running a 2:17 and getting faster every week

well well finally a runner on a decent training program that understands the need for water...i'm really quite impressed and frankly i just think your having a bad year...that lack of winter base is going to kill your true potential this year but you might want to make sure your racing using your full long stride, you also need to make sure your getting full potential from your arms and move them in a forward motion so that they aren't going across your chest...which brings me to another point if you lift weights and do ab and core workout's your performance will greatly increase...you don't need a high definition six pack and you don't need to be super buff but some weights and ab work greatly increase the max power your core and body can give...good luck to you and i hope you can continue to run the 800...also remember track is just as much a team sport as it is individual and it is sometimes more important to score points in a race you hate but are good at then to run your favorite race and not get points

  3. You're going to have to work at it a lot.   Practice by doing sprints, down and backs if you will.  As you get faster at your sprints, start making the sprints longer and longer until you can sprint for about say....800 meters!! It just takes work if you set your mind to it.

  4. train train train

    as hard as you can

winning the state title should be your motivation

and on top of that prove your coach you can do it

    just prove him wrong

and show him you can do it

    good luck
