Question:

Running with a stroller?

I have a running stroller that seems really light, but I'm having such a hard time getting back into running (after pregnancy; I'm 6 months pp). I run about 2 miles on a flat track and it's KILLING me to run 2 miles. I usually keep my right hand on the stroller, left hand in stride. Baby is about 18 pounds now.

Any suggestions about getting comfortable and/or building mileage running with the stroller?

  1. Good job, just stick with it best you can.....running is hard enough when your in shape.  Then to add pushing about 38 lbs. (18 baby and 20 stroller) is very difficult, I use to run with my kids every so often and I'm in great shape and my heart rate would soar (wear a heart rate monitor).  It was a very tough workout even though I was going about a minute per mile slower than normal training.  The fact that your doing it on a track is the best since there's no HILLS.  Try doing a few runs when you don't have to take the baby, that way you won't be carrying the extra weight.     Good Luck

  2. It sounds like you have two challenges going here: recoverying from child birth and the unorthadox form of runninng with over 25 pounds of baby, metal, canvas and rubber in front of you!

I know it's not nearly the same but as a dad and a LONG time distance runner I found that running with the stroller was something I just could not get used to for any distance over 4 miles and so I finally had to just accept that there was running and training and running with my baby in the running stroller. They were simply just two different "animals".

My advice is that you may need to separate your challenges. Find out about some good post partum excercises, find 2 or even 3 times a week to run (the "old conventional" way) and maybe just once a week with the stroller and only for about a mile or 20 minutes and at a jogs pace.

Then see how you feel about increasing the stroller running after a 3 - 6 weeks.  GOOD LUCK and congratulations on your 18 pound bundle of joy!

I have two daughters that are 13 and 16 now but it seems like yesterday that I was cruising down the street with our cool neon yellow jogger stroller!

  3. you should ride a bicycle and attach a kids attachment in the back.

  4. take a rest ever 4 miles or so it would help
