Russ Cochran grabs The Mitsubishi Electric Championship lead with 2 eagles
The Mitsubishi Electric Championship started on Friday the 21st January, 2011 and observed Russ Cochran ruling the leader board with a unique 62.
Statistics state that the golfer managed to card an impressive 10 under par to finish the first round of the Champions tour. Cochran carded a total of 2 brilliant Eagles and 6 birdies to list the earlier stated score.
The Eagles were collected from the back nine play of the golfer, which made way for the 52-year-old to grab his first ever lead in a Champions tour. To rule the leader board, Cochran carded a total of 6 under par with a 30 on the back nine at the Hualalai
Golf Club.
The title is being defended by Tom Watson, who managed to grab a total of 64 after the first round ended. The previous winner gave his best to match Cochran’s pace but could only muster up an 8 under par.
Watson grabbed a T2 place on the leader board and stood at the runners up place with Ben Crenshaw’s 64.
The defending champion has the record of winning last year’s Mitsubishi Electric Championship with a 1 stroke lead over Fred Couples. Couples was chasing Watson’s total score of 22 under par after a 122.
Now with a 64 after the first round of the 2011 Championship, Watson is aiming for his 14th victory on the Champions tour.
As for the bogeys, the leaders shunned them effortlessly. Friday came with 8 birdies for Watson and 6 for Crenshaw.
Crenshaw has never won a Champions Tour before and managed to score a perfect first round to collect his aspired goal. The 59-year-old golfer grabbed 13th place out of 5 as his best finish.
Other than the top three golfers, the 42 player field also includes the likes of major championship winners from the Champions Tour along with the official tournament winners and the 8 sponsor invites.
Coming back to the 52-year-old golfer, the leader managed a successful start on Friday and collected his first two birdies from the first two holes of the championship. With a solid start, Cochran further managed to card another birdie at the 5th
hole, with the 7th hole gifting another one.
The 4 birdies handed Cochran a 32 from his front nine play, which made way for 2 more birdies, and 2 massive eagles from his back nine play. The birdies were collected from hole number 12 and 15, while the eagles came from hole number 10 and 14 for the two-time
Masters champion.
Cochran and Crenshaw will begin their second round at 1:10 p.m. (local time) Saturday.
