Russ & Jane are in a race. Russ runs 7 mph and Jane 5 mph. If they start at the same time...?

how long will it be before they are 1.5 mi apart. I know its 45 minutes just using trial and error and the distance formula (d=rt), but can't seem to figure it out. Thankkks

In t hours,

Russ goes 7t miles, and

Jane goes 5t miles.

7t - 5t = 1.5 (miles apart)

2t = 1.5

t = .75 hours = 45 mins

here is what you have to do!

since they are running at different speeds!

at the end of an hour Russ would b at 7miles from start

and jane would b at 5 miles from start

so in 1 hour they would b 2 miles apart

in how many hours (X) would they be 1.5 miles apart?

you divide 1.5 by 2!

to get 0.75!

this is 0.75 hours! and three quarters of an hour is 45 mins!
