Russell Downing hopeful to make his way in Team Sky for the coming season – Cycling News
Russell Downing is unsure if he will find another season with Team Sky as his current contract is about to finish in few months time as he briefed, “I’m on a one-year deal with Sky, like I was last year, so I’m not quite sure what’s happening at the moment.
There are big things happening within Sky and I’m not sure where that leaves me in the team really.”
Mark Cavendish is expected to join team Sky at the end of his contract with team HTC and he is most likely to take at least one team-mate with him possibly, Bernhard Eisel. Australian cyclist Richie Porte might be another addition to the team Sky in coming
season.
The 32-year-old had raced in this year’s Giro d’ Italia which was his first grand tour and was looking good in the final stages before he crashed. He has now fully recovered from the injuries and is ready to take on the bigger challenges to prove team Sky
that he is capable to compete at any level. After recovering from the crash Downing commented on his health, “It’s taken me a while to get over it and I had to race again two weeks later and I just felt I had restricted breathing and power.”
Russell Downing is trying to find his form in the ongoing Tour of Denmark as he finished at 66th position during a 181 kilometre stage 3 at Tour of Denmark, with 6 minutes and 46 seconds behind the race leader Jakob Fuglsang of Leopard Trek.
Downing is at 77th position with his team-mate Simon Gerrans at first position after the stage 3 general classification of Tour of Denmark, 2011. Leopard Trek is leading the team’s classifications with Sky Procycling at second and Team Europcar
at third position.
Downing admitted that it will be few strange weeks as nothing is clear as to which cyclists are joining the team Sky and he is also uncertain about his position in the team. He shared his thoughts that continuing with team Sky is his biggest priority at
the moment as he has spent some wonderful years with Sky but he cannot force the team to give him another contract.
