Russell Henley leads by two at the Sony Open in Hawaii
Right after two days of his career on the PGA Tour, Russell Henley has started recording his name in the history books. He fired 63s in each of the first two rounds that he played at the Sony Open in Hawaii, to take a two shot halfway lead, on Friday, January
11, 2012.
At the end of the day, he found himself breaking the 36-hole tournament record, as he posted a 14-under par two-round score. It was two strokes better than the previous 36-hole record.
The tournament is being played at the Waialae Country Club, and is the first full-field event of the 2013 PGA Tour season.
Entering the second round, Henley was trailing the overnight leader Scott Langley by one stroke. He then opened his second-round campaign with a birdie putt on the 10th hole.
The back nine of the course witnessed him add another two shots to his scorecard, on the 16th and the 18th hole, to reach the turn in three under.
Thereafter, he put his putter on fire and drained four birdie putts on the front nine of the course. At the end of the day, he had a two-stroke lead over Langley and Scott Piercy.
The highlight of his performance included his great skills off the tee and on the fairways. He created birdie chances on each of the 18 holes.
Talking to the PGA Tour’s official website, he expressed his pleasure in making a strong start to his rookie campaign on the PGA Tour. The American said that he played really well throughout the first two rounds and plans to remain consistent on the weekend
too.
“Got off to a good start, hit a good drive on the first hole, and that always ‑‑ No. 10 is a pretty narrow hole, and it felt good to hit a good one and kind of relaxed me a little bit,” he said.
“Hit a little 50‑yard wedge up there and made like a pretty big curling putt for birdie, about six‑ or seven‑footer. Just kind of nice to start out with a solid hole like that,” added the American.
