Russell Westbrook, Stephen Curry - Point Guards who have ruled NBA in the last decade – Part 2
8. Stephen Curry
The Golden State Warriors prodigy beats John Wall to take home the number eight spot. The 6 ft 3 inch point guard was the Golden State Warriors’ 7th overall pick in the 2009 drafts. Since then, Curry has managed to rise
beyond everyone’s expectations and has delivered well on the biggest stage of them all.
In the 2010-2011 season, Curry managed to earn an average of 18.6 points, 5.8 assists and 3.9 rebounds per game. He has been relatively accurate with 48% field goals, 44% from behind the three point arc and 93% from the free throw
line.
Apart from his statistics, the future star has excellent vision and impressive distribution skills. Originally, Curry was mostly thought of as a shooter, but he has shown that he can be a highly versatile player who can adjust
his bearings according to the situation of the game.
What is even more striking about the young Warrior is the fact that he managed to rack up all those statistics whilst playing alongside Monta Ellis, who the premier scorer for Golden State.
Curry proved that he can do even better without Monta Ellis, as he netted a remarkable 32 points in a game against the New Jersey Nets, where Ellis was out due to injury.
Stephen Curry made it to the All Rookie 1st team of 2010 and was also a contender for the Rookie of the year award. After surprising everyone in his first two seasons, Curry has laid the foundation towards becoming one the best
point guards in the NBA.
7. Russell Westbrook
At number seven in this list, is Oklahoma City Thunder’s star player Russell Westbrook. Russell was drafted three years ago by the Seattle Supersonics, now known as Oklahoma City Thunder.
Westbrook has had an illustrious start to his career which has helped him make inroads as one of better point guards in the game today. He successfully averaged around 21.9 points, 8.2 assists and 4.6 rebounds; per game.
Russell is an extremely exciting talent, who can just about do anything on the court. Be it shooting, creating assists, making steals; he knows how to get things done. However, his all round ability had caused him to play the game
in a selfish manner at times.
He needs to remember that he plays alongside Kevin Durant, one of the most prolific scorers in the league. Last season’s playoff loss at the hands of the Dallas Mavericks is often attributed to Westbrook, as he took on too many
misguided shots and ended up averaging 36% from the field.
Russell could be much higher on the list if he tries to play in his positional element, which would require him to pass the ball more frequently to Durant. If he can get that partnership going, he could very well be ranked amongst
the top three point guards in the league.
