With better combination of defence and the excellent attacks Russia maintained its good run in the second set. However, Portugal threw everything in attack and tried to take revenge. Portugal’s Beatriz Santos and Mariana Maia put up a combined effort to
catch up with the Russian counterparts. Their effort was commendable Russia clawed its way 25-21 win in second set.
The tough Portuguese squad came up with strong offence in the third set and managed to break the rhythm of charged-up Russian hitters. Portugal built a 5-point lead but Russia bounced back after the first technical timeout. The Portuguese fell down and could
not raise head again. Russia added quick points and cruised past to 25-14 win in third set, and settled for 3-0 victory.
In the next match of the day-2 in Pool D, host Romania crossed ways with team from Finland. The home team totally profited the competitive edge and did not allow Finnish girls to come up. Middle blocker Iuliana Matache staged an eye-catching action on the
net and supported Romanian team in the first set. Romania secured opening set of the match with a good margin of 11 points, 25-14.
The second set also came successful for Romania as the team played with great intensity and determination. Finnish wing spiker Cristina Cazacu resisted in full force but failed to stay in the way of killing spikes from Romanian side. Finland dropped second
set after scoring 19 points, while Romania went on front with 2-0 lead.
Afterwards, Romania dominated the visiting squad throughout the third set. Finland scored only 9 points in third frame and accepted defeat in the match.
