Russia Open Grand Prix 2012: Sabrina Jaquet ousts Kristina Averkina in Women’s Singles first round
Switzerland’s Sabrina Jaquet remained lucky in Women’s Singles first round when she employed all of her skills to beat her local rival Kristina Averkina in an epic battle in Russia Open Grand Prix 2012 on Wednesday, June 27, in Russia.
The World Number 68 Sabrina, who is un-seeded in Women’s Singles draw of the championship, struggled really hard on court and also put in extra effort to overpower Kristina in a nerve-racking contest.
The higher ranked Sabrina easily bagged the opening game but failed to maintain her commanding position in the second set. Nonetheless, she played with variations in the final set and won the fight in rubber games.
In the meanwhile, Kristina could not find a good start but showed her brilliance in the second game. However, she failed to stop the fireworks of Sabrina in the deciding set lost to her in three sets in 32 minutes.
Sabrina started her journey against Kristina in a confident manner as she played attacking badminton and took a reasonable advantage of 11-7 until the one-minute break.
After the mid-game interval, the higher ranked Sabrina continued showing her tremendous craft and maintained pressure on her confused opponent in the entire concluding half. She bagged the set with a surprising ease by a huge difference of 21-13.
In the second game, Sabrina again was in strong position while playing positive badminton and took a four-point advantage of 11-7 until the end of first half.
After the break, Russian lady elevated her play by increasing her speed and started to narrow the gap. She was in good control of rallies this time and managed to make the score levelled at 14-14.
At the ending phase, Sabrina was leading with a 19-18 margin when she lost her focus and eventually paid the price by losing the set with a 19-21 score on the board.
However, it was a completely different story in the deciding game when Sabrina occupied the driving seat from the opening points and maintained her dominating run all the way to clinch the set with a tremendous 21-12 score on the board.
Sabrina secured victory in this Women’s Singles first round battle in three games with an interesting score of 21-13, 19-21 and 21-12.
