  1. The conflict began 8 August 2008 after Georgia claimed South Ossetian separatists had broken a ceasefire by attacking villages. Georgia launched a military offensive to surround and capture the capital of South Ossetia, Tskhinvali

  2. Basically when USSR collapsed a small piece of land called South Ossetia separated from Georgia - de facto after a civil was in Georgia in 1990. They there were tensions ever after with Russia actively supporting Ossetia, including making them Russian citizens, paying them pensions etc. There were talks about Ossetia joining Russia. A couple days ago Georgian president declared a ceasefire and like three hours later bombed Ossetia killing 2000 civilians. Russia retaliated and invaded Georgia. Russians say don't intend to topple Georgian government, they just want to send a message. It's pretty complicated, no one in the west media talks about Georgian government being a US puppet and Georgia attacking Ossetia.
