Russia announces 50-man provisional squad for 2011 Rugby World Cup campaign
The Rugby Union of Russia (RUR), the leading body of Russian rugby, has announced their 50-man provisional squad for the 2011 Rugby World Cup (RWC). Officials have confirmed the roster in a statement released on by the union on Monday, June 20.
Even though Russia has been an active member of the rugby community, this year the country will make their Rugby World Cup debut in New Zealand.
President of the RUR, Vyacheslav Kopiev, has termed the squad announcement as historical and called the selection of players in the provisional squad as an honour. He added, “They are representing Russia in our first ever participation in a Rugby World Cup.
We wish them well in their training and have trust in each of them to strive to their maximum to gain selection to our Rugby World Cup Squad of 30.”
Russian National Teams Director, Kingsley Jones, has termed the players as the best available crop of recruits. He said, “We have carried out an International and Nationwide search to identify this squad. Selection has been made afresh and the squad is full
of potential with many players with talent ready for this stage’.
Russian national rugby union team’s manager and head coach, Nikolay Nerush, has expressed confidence that his team is working hard and they will perform well in the 2011 RWC. He added, “I am delighted that we are currently producing performances that are
showing the progress that has been made through the hard work of the players and the coaches.”
Vlad Korshunov will lead the Russian team in the 2011 RWC. The 50-man provisional squad announced includes 22 Backs and 28 forwards. RUR will announce their final 30-man squad for 2011 RWC in August.
