Russia bags gold in the FIVB World League championship – Volleyball news
The final of the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) World League took place on Sunday in Gdansk, Poland where the final round of the tournament was being conducted. The thrill and excitement echoed from the crowd as Russia beat Brazil 3-2 in
a very close five set match
The venue of the match was the Ergo Arena which was jam-packed despite the fact that the home team, Poland, could not make it to the decisive match. The game that unfolded between the number one ranked Brazilian team and the number two ranked Russian squad
was as thrilling and nail biting as expected. Interestingly, the 2010 FIVB final was also a competition between Russia and Brazil, in which Brazil earned the top honour. This time around however, it was the Russian Squad that was able to redeem itself by securing
a win after five long and grueling sets at the following final set scores: 23-25, 27-25, 25-23, 22-25, 15-11.
The first set of the match saw the Russian squad take some time in coming into form as they were bettered by the Brazilian team in a close set. Having lost the opening set of the game, the Russians were able to step up their efforts and provide a significant
challenge to the Brazilians by equalising the match in a second set win. Building on the momentum generated by winning the second set of the match, the Russians went all the way to bag the third set as well. With the pressure now at its peak on the Brazilian
team to give themselves a winning chance at the match by making a win in the fourth set, the Brazilians did not relent and took the match to the deciding fifth. The final set of the match progressed with all the expected excitement as both teams were giving
all their best to get their hands on the gold medal. However, it was the Russians who were finally able to emerge as victors.
The Russian captain, Taras Khtei made the following comments after his team had won the prestigious title: “I hope this final was nice to watch for everybody, it was a real volleyball fiesta. I would like to thank the Polish fans. You will stay in our hearts
for a long time, along with these gold medals. I think I can now agree with the opinion of Reid Priddy, that we are one of the best teams in the world, because we finally sealed it with a success. There is an opinion in our country that we should be the leaders,
so we will work on it and we will try to stay on top.”
The Brazilians had to swallow the bitter pill of defeat and walked after losing their crown to the Russian squad.
