Russia bags the Super League at European Cup Combined Events – Athletics news
Appearing at the 29th edition of the European Cup Combined Events in Torun, Poland, the Russian contingent prevailed against eight other strong squads of the event.
The annual event, which used to be arranged after every two years until 1993, is primarily comprised of the Men’s decathlon and Women’s heptathlon competitions. In the Men’s contests for the decathlon competitions, France and Russia entered the grounds as
pre-favourites and lived up to the expectations, as both squads were rather close to each other until the second day of the event was concluded.
The most superior part of the European combined events was marred by the challenging weather conditions as during the competition, Poland experienced heavy rains and cold temperatures. On both of the tournament days, the maximum temperature revolved around
11 degrees Celsius.
Emerging at the European Cup Combined Events is a matter of prestige and pride, as this is the oldest combined event that boasts of a sustained rich tradition which dates back to 1973.
The interesting aspect of the international tournament is that the winning squad is determined on the basis of the performances laid by their top three performers, where the points scored by them are tallied against overall team scores.
Major performers of the event in the Men’s side were Andres Raja, Florian Geffrouais, and Vasyl Ivanytskyi. While in the Women’s corner, Anna Bogdanova, Alina Fyodorova, Lyudmyla Yosypenko and Remona Fransen dominated proceedings with their terrific performances.
The tournament first commenced in West Germany’s cosmopolitan city of Bonn and is organised annually by the European Athletic Association. Today, it is a part of the series international team athletics competitions, which are also organized by the European
Athletics Association.
The event takes place at three different levels which are known as the Super League, 1st League and Second League, while according to the rules, the contingent that manages to prevail at the Super League is regarded as the winner of the European
Cup. Thus, dominating rivals in the respective event was rather a dream come true for the Russian squad.
As a bonus for the winners, the results produced at this combined event are also counted for the International Association of Athletics Federation’s Combined Events Challenge.
