Russia beats Germany by 3-1 to top Pool C: FIVB Men's Junior World Championship
The third day matches of the FIVB Men's Junior World Championship took place on August 3rd and included a contest for the first position in Pool C between Russia and Germany at the Maracanazinho Gymnasium in Rio de Janeiro. The four set thriller
ended with the Russian team celebrating a win and their top slot.
The first set saw a bit of a competition being put up by the German side but the Russian played was strong and bagged the opening set of the game. The Germans put up a strong performance in the second set and were able to accomplish a much deserved win.
Despite the fact that the third and the fourth games were equally intense, the Germans could not prevail and win any of them as a result of which the Russians won the match at the following final set scores: 25-20, 24-26, 25-23 and 25-23.
The Russian coach, Sergey Shlyapnikov, made the following comments at the press conference after his team had won the match: “Russia has a huge tradition in Junior World Championships and I am glad we advanced in the first place of our pool. Matches in next
round will be very hard and we need to prepare for them.”
On the other hand, the German coach, Bernard Stewart, expressed himself in the following words: “We fought a lot to win this match. Even when we were back, we tried to reverse the score. We managed to win the second set and could have won the third as well.
The team improved a lot from last matches.”
The start of the first set of the game saw the Russian team fall into errors that helped in the Germans taking the lead at 7-4. However, once the Russians had their footing, they were able to counter by getting the lead for themselves at 11-10 that got extended
till 20-16. After that point, the Germans kept trailing as the Russians won the opening set of the game at 25-20.
The second set of the game started in favour for the Russians but before they could get too far, the Germans pushed past and took the lead at 9-8. But the Russians were not about to give up as they got the lead aback at 18-12. But the competition did not
wear off at this point as Germany put on a spurt of speed that took them to 24-21 that later got translated into a win at 26-24.
The third set started off with a Russian lead at 8-5 and stayed with it till the end when the Germans tried to upset the Russians but the set was bagged by Russia at 25-23. Similarly, the fourth set of the game was fairly one sided and Russia successfully
bagged it at 25-23.
The second round of the tournament will see the Russians placed in Group E.
