Russia beats India 3-0 and enters second round of the FIVB Men´s Junior World Championship
Russia handed out a defeat to the Indians on August 2nd in a Pool C match of the FIVB Men´s Junior World Championship and became the first team to enter the second round of the tournament. The championships are currently being hosted at Rio de
Janeiro and Niteroi in Brazil.
The match in the Maracanazinho Gymnasium, Rio de Janeiro ended in a three set win for the Russians. The Indian squad put up a fight in the opening set of the game but could not achieve a win. The Russian performance grew stronger as the Indians slacked in
the second as well as the third set. As a result, the Russians won the match at the following final ser scores: 25-23, 25-17 and 25-18.
The coach of the Russian team, Sergey Shlyapnikov, made the following comments at the press conference after his team had sealed a win: “Volleyball is a game where the team that makes less mistakes win. Even though India made some mistakes, they were tough
rivals”.
On the other hand, the Indian coach, M.H. Kumara, expressed himself in the following words: “First set was really tight and if we had win it, perhaps the match could have been different. But congratulations to Russia, they deserved to win. We will play very
focused against Egypt. We defeated them in friendly matches prior but now it will be a different situation.”
The Russians were able to dominate the opening set of the match early on by taking the lead at 4-1. However, the Indians did not give up the chase and were eventually able to make the set reach a tie at 18-18. The rest of the set remained tight but the Russians
prevailed in bagging the initial set of the game at 25-23.
Capitalising on the momentum built on winning the first set of the game, the Russians were able to come out strong in the second set as well. The Russians had the lead at 4-0 which they were able to extend till 16-10. The Indians kept on trailing behind
as the Russian Squad smoothly sailed for another set win at 25-17.
The start of the third set was a tough battle between Russia and India as the Indians looked determined to take the match to a fourth set in order to give themselves a winning chance in the game. However, the Russians were able to move ahead at 16-13, that
eventually translated into a win at 25-18.
The player that tallied the most points on the Russian side was Andrey Kolesnik as he scored 15. The Indian player that helped in keeping the pressure on the Russian squad was Jhon Christopher as he scored 13 points in the entire match.
