Russia defeat Great Britain in preliminary round, Group A – European Water Polo Championships
Russia’s national squad defeated Great Britain in their second Women’s water polo preliminary match of Group ‘A’ on fifth day of the 2012 European Water Polo Championships in Eindhoven, Netherlands on Friday, January 20 at the Pieter van den Hoogenband Swim
Stadium.
The Russian squad continued their unrelenting efforts and grabbed a commendable victory over British team by a margin of five goals. Russia took a 15-10 lead over Great Britain in the four-quarter match and ascended on the scorecard.
The British squad tried to prove their mettle over Russia by scoring two goals in the initial three minutes of the game, but they failed to affirm their supremacy as the Russians stroked six goals and took the lead of 6-2 in the first round.
The British squad elevated their struggle in the second round, where they managed to restrain Russia from scoring more goals. The British players hit the cage twice while the Russians added three goals to their scorecard, making the score 9-4 after the first
half.
The third quarter saw endless aggression of British players, who finally managed to prove their dominance and blocked all efforts of their challenging team. They scored three goals in the third round while Russia was able to score a single goal only. Despite
of their gruelling efforts, the British squad failed to bring substantial harm to their opposing team and they only succeeded in reducing the lead to three goals as the score remained 10-7 after third round.
Similarly, the Russians fought back in the final quarter and scored five goals to ensure their victory. On the other side, British team was able to accomplish three goals and suffered their second defeat of the tournament at the hands of Russians.
After winning their second bout of the tournament, Russia now stands on second place at the overall rankings list behind Hungary. Nadezhda Fedotova of Russia scored four goals in the game and was announced player of the match.
Furthermore, these European championships are a warm-up session for the 2012 London Olympic Games and will depict the performance of each team at the upcoming mega event.
