Russia defeats Poland by 3-2: Volleyball news
The last day of the fourth round of the 2011 FIVB Men's World Cup saw a match being played between Russia and Poland in Tokyo. The tournament is being staged in Japan, after the country recently welcomed the 2011 FIVB Women's World Cup. The venue of the
competition between Poland and Russia was the Yoyogi National Gym. The Russians started celebrating their hard earned win following a final set score of 25-22, 23-25, 25-22, 17-25 and 17-15.
The first set of the match saw both teams come out strong and play neck to neck with each other. Neither team was letting the other get the lead for a long time and the frame went back and forth till the end when the Russians managed to push forwards and
secure the opening set. The loss of the first set caused the Polish squad to perform better in the second frame and grab themselves a win.
With the match equalised, the Russians were able to get ahead by getting hold of the third frame after taking the lead in the middle of the set and sticking with the advantage all the way to the end. The Polish responded by putting on an impressive display
of volleyball skill in the fourth set and smothering their opponents. However, after a tough fight in the fifth set, the Polish could not last out the trail and lost to the Russians.
The coach of the Russian squad, Vladimir Alekno, expressed himself in the following words: “My congratulations to Poland for their qualification for the Olympics. They got what they came here for. I am the happiest person on Earth today because it is my
45th birthday. I have to thank my team for the efforts in this tournament.”
On the other hand, the Polish coach Andrea Anastasi, shared his views by making the following statements: “We have played an incredible tournament. With only six month of work we have finished second in the World Cup. We have to play good to reach this position,
but we must do more to reach the top level. We still must work harder in the future.”
