Russia dominates the Under-23 Kazan European Championship: Fencing Recap
Like the previous days, the fourth day of the U-23 European Championship was also dominated by the host fencers, Russia yesterday, on May 30. The event will conclude today, on May 31, at the Wrestling Palace 'Ak Bars' in Tatarstan’s capital, Kazan in Russia.
The first event of the day was Men’s Epee team competition, in which seven teams took part. The Polish team won over the Germans with the final winning-hit at 45-44. Hungary trounced Ukraine by 45-40 whereas Italy was triumph over Belarus at an easy score-hit
of 45-28, in the quarter-finals.
The top three podium places were won by Russia, Italy and Poland, respectively. The Russian men, comprising of Vadim Anokhin, Alexander Giants, Nikita Glazkov and Pavel Sukhov, defeated the Italians by an easy 45-39 win, whereas Poland had a play-off against
Hungary, in which they trounced their opponents by 45-40, sealing a bronze-medal win.
The second event of the day was Women’s Sabre team, in which six teams had participated. The teams to advance in the semi-finals included Russia, Azerbaijan, Hungary and Poland. The Polish defeated Hungary by a single-handed 45-33, whereas Russia let down
Azerbaijan by a similar 45-39, both making it into the finals.
The Russian team, consisting of Yulia Gavrilova, Dina Galiakbarova, Anna Illarionov, Victoria Kovalev, managed to overpower the Polish women by a 45-40 win, sealing their second gold of the day.
On the other hand, the play-off took place between Azerbaijan and Hungary, in which the Azeri women out-played Hungary by a similar 45-40, winning the bronze medal.
The third and last competition was played in the Women’s Foil team discipline, in which only six teams appeared for the championship.
This competition began with a fierce battle between Ukraine and Poland, in which Ukraine hammered their opponents with a 43-30 score-win.
On the other hand, the face-off between Hungary and Italy was all the most fear-some with Hungary, when the Italian women nailed it with a humongous 45-26 win. However, it was astonishing to see Italy being beaten down by the Germans in the semi-finals with
a 45-33.
The final was played between the host team, Russia including Camilla Gafurzyanova, Anastasia Ivanova, Ekaterina Kazhikina, Diana Yakovleva, and Germany, in which Russia single-handedly took up the gold medal with a 45-18, whereas Germany was left with silver
in hand.
On the other hand, in the play-off round, Polish women secured the bronze medal win after defeating Italy by 45-23.
