Russia hammer Hungary in preliminary round, Group A: Day seven – European Water Polo Championships
Russian senior team hammered Hungary in their third Women’s water polo qualifying match of Group ‘A’ on seventh day of the ongoing 2012 European Water Polo Championships in Eindhoven, Netherlands on Sunday, January 22 at the Pieter van den Hoogenband Swim
Stadium.
The European championships are of utmost importance, as they provide a chance to international teams to warm-up for the upcoming 2012 London Olympic Games.
The Russian team faced severe battle from Hungarian squad throughout the four-quarter game but they managed to grab victory by a margin of three goals. Russia defeated Hungary with a score of 12-9 in the 32-minute game.
The first quarter of the game was dominated by Russian players, who advanced on the scorecard by notching up three goals. Their effort was trailed by Hungarian squad, which succeeded in scoring just one goal and the round expired with a score of 3-1.
The second quarter saw scintillating efforts of Hungarian athletes, who geared up their efforts and threatened their opposing team by achieving five goals. In contrast, Russia was able to secure a lead of one goal as they marked four goals and the score
went up to 7-6 after the first half.
The Russians improved their strategy in the third quarter and stroke four goals to strengthen their position. On the other hand, Hungarian squad seemed helpless in the third round and was able to throw the ball in Russian cage just for once. The score remained
11-7 after the third round.
The Hungarian players elevated their efforts in the final round but it was too late to bring harm to the Russian team. Hungary secured two goals in the final round while Russian team notched up a single goal and celebrated its victory with a difference of
three goals.
Nadezhda Fedotova and Evgeniya Ivanova of Russia scored three goals each to confirm their team’s victory in the game. With their stupendous win, Russia has secured its top spot in the overall rankings list and is now qualified for the semi-final.
Furthermore, Hungarian team will compete with Spain in the quarterfinal on Tuesday, January 24.
