Russia lifts Women’s Free Combination crown in Shanghai - 2011 FINA World Championships
Day five of the 2011 FINA World Championships got-off to a strong start with the scintillating performance of Russian swimmers in the Women’s Free Combination meet in Shanghai, China, on Thursday, July 21.
In the corresponding category, Russia snared the golden crown with a sterling mark of 98.470 points. The Russian squad was comprised of Anastasia Davydova, Maria Gromova, Ishchenko, Elvira Khasyanova, Svetlana Kolesnichenko, Daria Korobova, Aleksandra Patskevich,
Svetlana Romashina, Alla Shishkina and Anzhelika Timanina.
While speaking about her team’s performance in the Free Combination event, Natalia Ishchenko said, “Our coach said our show was wonderful today with our theme Carmen. We practice 10 hours per day.”
In the meantime, China captured the silver medal with a winning score of 96.390 points. The Chinese team consisted of Chang Si, Chen Xiaojun, Fan Jiachen, Guo Li, Huang Xuechen, Liu Ou, Luo Xi, Sun Wenyan, Wu Yiwen and Yu Lele. The win is China’s second
consecutive silver title in the World Championships.   
After the race, Chinese swimmer, Chang commented, “I felt a little nervous but also excited. The coach and staff have done a lot for us, so we can make great progress. I think we will continue to improve through hard work.”
Canada grabbed the bronze medal of the respective meet with a total score of 96.150 points. Genevieve Belanger, Marie-Pierre Boudreau-Gagnon, Stephanie Durocher, Jo-Anne Fortin, Chloe Isaac, and Stephanie Leclair, Tracy Little, Elise Marcotte, Karine Thomas
and Valerie Welsh represented the Canadian squad in the event.
Meanwhile, Canadian athlete, Welsh said that they did not expect this kind of a performance in the competition and the squad is more than pleased with their efforts.
Spain finished fourth with a total score of 95.740 points, while Ukraine earned fifth place honours with a mark of 92.080 points. Italy secured the sixth spot after the team managed a total of 90.550 points, whereas, Great Britain captured the seventh place
with 87.760 points. Korea finished eighth with 86.340 points, whereas, Netherlands settled for the ninth spot with a total mark of 85.440 points.
