Russia moves on to final of FIVB Men's Junior World Championship - Volleyball
The Russians were able to qualify for the championship match of the FIVB Men's Junior World Championship by handing out a defeat to the Serbians on August 9th. The venue of the semi-final match was the Marcanazinho Gymnasium in Rio de Janeiro,
Brazil. The Russians were able to emerge as victors by bagging the match at 3-1.
The first set was tough with both sides giving their best. However, the Russians prevailed in sealing the deal in the end. The second set was dominated by Russia with Serbia just managing to keep up. The loss of the first two sets propelled the Serbians
to grab the third set but that was the only moment of glory for the Serbians as the fourth set was taken by the Russians. Russia won the match at the following final set scores: 25-22, 25-15, 23-25 and 25-13.
The Russian coach, Sergey Shlyapnikov, commented in the following way at the press conference that was held after the match: “We played a very good match. We had trouble with Serbian opposite Atanasijevic, who will be a great player for their team in the
future.”
Whereas the Serbian assistant coach, Dragan Djordjevic, expressed himself by giving these statements: “We played a good match, but made too many mistakes, especially in receiving. Russia has an amazing block power and it took them to the gold medal match.”
The first set of the match saw the Russians take the lead at 4-1 but the Serbians quickly got it tied at 6-6 and found themselves leading at 11-9, an advantage which they were able to extend until 16-12. However, Russia did not give up the chase and moved
up ahead at 20-18 that later turned into an opening set win at 25-22.
The start of the second frame was tight but the Russians managed to get the advantage at 12-10. Once they had the lead, the Russians extended it to 16-11. The Serbians could not score much as the blocking of the Russian side was working well. As a result,
Russia bagged the second set at 25-15.
Playing with a two set deficit, the Serbians were able to improve their game in the third set and were seen leading at 13-10. Despite the fact that the Russians kept on the chase and tied the score at 13-13, the Serbians did not give up until they had sealed
the deal at 25-23.
The Russians took the lead at 5-1 in the fourth set and improved it to 12-3. The Serbians could not do much to stop Russia from securing a win at 25-13.
This is not the first time that the Russians will be playing the gold medal match. They have already bagged the title a total number of seven times.
