"This isn't the 15th century. You can't go around the world and just plant flags and say 'We're claiming this territory'," said Canadian Foreign Minister Peter MacKay.

"There is no threat to Canadian sovereignty in the Arctic ... we're not at all concerned about this mission -- basically it's just a show by Russia."

  3. Canada is like a little child whining b/c a 6 ft 300 lb man stole its lolipop!  Actually, they both better stop their bickering before the almighty USofA steps in, kicks some a**, and eats that lolipop in one bite!  All the Way USA!

  5. how is it an overreation when Russia tries to claim an area that belongs to us?

  6. Canadians have reason to be concerned - in addition to its offensive in the North, Russia is also fighting on the flanks. Recently, President Vladimir Putin approved a government proposal to sign an agreement with Norway delimiting the Barents Sea shelf. This would end an almost 40-year dispute over a no-man's-land that covers 155,000 square kilometers and holds more than three trillion cubic meters of gas, an amount comparable to the Shtokman deposit.

  7. NO.  In today's world of greed nations have to protect themselves which is what Canada is doing.

  8. Oil.

Supposedly there is a heck of a lot of oil under the North Pole.  Which nation gets to drill for it, use it, sell it.  The Russians planted this flag & now think all the resources down there are theirs for the taking.

The world is running out of oil.

Of course the answer is an energy policy that uses alternatives, but oil is easy, and we are all lazy.

  9. A country can plant a flag on any territory that is not claimed by any country.  Thus, the act of Russia is valid unless a country objects to its act.

  10. This is a claim for a territory geographically located closer to Russia. How can Canada claim a territory which is closer to a different country. What our TV say is that the territory which is now studied by the Russian scienstists is the continuation of the underwater Lomonosov mountain ridge stretching from the Russian territories. According to International regulations such location gives right to Russia to claim this territory.

  11. They are not overreacting at all.

Russia is making a play for the oil known to be in that region.

  12. Well, I don't think that Russia can claim anything because it belongs to the USA.
